Social media’s impact on adolescent mental health has become critical, with the 2023 Surgeon General’s Advisory highlighting significant risks, yet current legislative responses often focus on banning access, potentially dis-advantaging marginalized groups like LGBQT+ youth. The Social Media Research Institute (SMRI) advocates for a more nuanced approach, emphasizing education, research, and platform transparency. This presentation will explore strategies for Social Media Harm Reduction® and Social Media First Aid®, offering tools for youth, parents, and caregivers to manage social media risks. Attendees will also review the latest research and legislative efforts aimed at enhancing platform transparency to support effective behavioral health practices.
